So... turns out that on this day even my back-up IR remote decided to stop working :( I was all set up and everything!

Sigh.

Thankfully I (mum) finally located a new battery and so all is good. It was just too late for this photo is all.

Much love,
D.

230/365 Its a dirty job but somebody's got to do it

Via Flickr:
At the carwash wo-ooo o-oo yeah-ee yeaaaaaaaah, at the car wash yeah!

I think I may have done a tap dance to that song once upon a time... maybe?

My car is atrociously dirty, at the moment, I'm just too cheap to take it for a wash and too lazy to do it myself.

I should pretend that this was really me cleaning my car but really all I did was the windows before I got distracted and never made it back to do that rest.

Actually that is kind of a lie too. I never really intended to wash the whole car, its just the fact that it was dirty in the first place made me think of this photo.

Flakey moment for Darcy.

What can I say, there had to be something not so perfect about me ;)

Much love,
D.

I call this, damn I'm stressed about this assignment I have to get done by midnight and don't feel it would be safe to take a moment and think of a better picture.

I'm just accepting these days that the point of a 365 (well mine anyway) isn't about making a great photo everyday but rather just being in the habit of having my camera around and in use everyday. If I like or see some sort of future learning potential in 1 in 7 or so of the pictures I am pretty happy. :)

Much love,
D.

I shall call this "CRAP! the battery on my radio remote is dead and I already had the whole shot set up and it was going to be so cool because I was going to be climbing all over this thing and having fun and hopefully not killing myself but now, now now now I am forced to instead set the timer and run run run, climb climb climb and try desperately not to slip and fall and oh, look, turn, pose, click, phew I'm alive"

I'm just going to assume that I am the only person who understood when the paragraph above says but I'll leave it there anyway.

Yes I am still here. Yes I have lots of photos to post. No I am not sure when that will happen because these days I never know when I am going to have a real live computer in front of me at the same time as I have no essay clouds looming overhead. But it will be done.

You know how some people have bands in their garage? Well I dance in mine. And usually I don't like much light in the room so I turn the atrium chandelier on and use my clarinet as a door stopper to let just the tiniest sliver of light into the room. This is an image that mom is quite used too although usually I guess the lighting is reversed as it is darkness seeping out from behind the door and light on the other side.

Plus I got to play with my new flashes and discover just exactly how little light you need to reach the slave flashes sensor to set it off :)

This photo is dedicated to my good friend Carmen. After seeing me "Pick your poison" photo from a few days ago she sent me the following text:

Your latest photo? You literally have a speck of black nail polish on it. You kill me. I want to give you a mani everytime I see that lol. Xoxo

So I was kind and for my friends sanity decided to paint my nails from scratch.

Of course this was almost 7 days ago now so once again my nails are in a shambles. But at least I have proof that for a time, they were in fact worthy of public display.

Love you Carmen ;)

insert lighting set up here and settings, also add lighting tags Lumopro LP180 and Metz Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1

I spent some of today taking photos for mum to post in her Aussie curves blog post. It was great to have a willing model for once - and since I was also doing her a favour she was really quite patient with me and my fumbling around with settings etc... :) thanks mum!

Anyway, by the time it came to my turn I was both too lazy to come up with a different concept and also just wanted to hop in and take a picky with mum :) so I did. Yay for happy snaps.

Lighting details:
I don't for the life of me remember the ratios but there is the big shoot through umbrella to camera left pointing diagonally downwards and a rim light behind us.

Oh and of course there is an awesome out take - a girl has got to be allowed to go a little crazy sometimes ;)

Via Flickr:
So today we (yeah I am just so important I get to use the royal plural today) were playing with and examining the effect of relative light size. I took 4 photos (back to just me again) each using a different lighting modifier but attempting to keep as many of the other variables - such as direction of light, distance from subject and overall average exposure settings constant.

So we got to choose from ceiling reflection, shoot through umbrella, home-made-shoebox soft-box and bare flash.

To be honest, when viewing the different versions on my computer my reactions were constantly oscillating between "can't really see a difference" to "wow the quality of light looks so different" so lets just average it out and say that I was surprised how subtle the lighting differences can appear yet still effectively change the 'mood' of the image created.

Any who, final winner was the shoot through umbrella version, closely followed by the home-made-shoebox soft-box. I'd tell you why but I am still trying to figure that one out... Just gut for the moment.

All four versions are in the comments below and you can find the Strobist(R) lighting tutorials I have been systematically working through here.

3. Size of light source
------------------------------

Lighting details:
Key light: Lumopro LP160 @ ?1/16th? (In my defence I did write it down this time but then promptly lost the scrap piece of paper) through a 40" white shoot through umbrella about 45° above subject to camera left and about 30-40cm away from face.
Rim light: Metz Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1 @ ?1/8th? Opposite key light and about 1.5m away but shooting at 90° (ie parallel to floor), bare but a piece of cardboard to prevent light spill/lens flare

Its Friday which means that I was hauled up in the library all day trying in vain to get my readings done so that I could enjoy the weekend (as it is now the end of the weekend I feel that this might have been futile as I instead chose to sleep through most of it). So I take a 30 minute break to go out and take a photo and I see these berries and I have an apple in my bag and they just looked so red and happy yet evil at the same time. Anywho... see ya.

Via Flickr:
Last week was a long week. By my standards anyway... which admittedly are currently uni life standards so for most of you that would probably equate to a 'light' week. Photo taken on my 1 hour lunch break in the middle of 5 hours of lectures and 1 tutorial. I've got to say - I really need to work on my attention span. Anyway, I have found this to be the best way to avoid talking to all of the random group representatives that have taken up residence on the uni lawn and always seem to be insisting that I fill out their surveys... Now that I think about it, sleep feels like a really good idea about now.

Much love,

Still playing with my new flash and loving having so much control over what is and isn't lit. Don't get me wrong, I still have a very healthy appreciation for my cheap old halogen lights but their problem is that they have a tendency to light EVERYTHING in sight. That and they only have 2 power settings - on and off. So lets just say that I am on a high of possibilities, and I haven't even started using extra lighting modifiers yet :D

2. Flash DoF testing

2. Flash DoF testing by Darcy89
2. Flash DoF testing, a photo by Darcy89 on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
Did you know that light has a DoF? Neither did I. Then I learnt that that is just another fancy way of talking about the inverse square law which being a high school physics nerd made sooooo much more sense to me :)

Anyway, this is another in the strobist 102 exercises that I am hoping will get me out of the whole "oh shit I don't know what to do with this" mind space and more into the "I know the basics so I can feel free to experiment" mind space.

Basically the idea behind this exercise was to turn a white/light background black/dark. I kind of half achieved the aim but I'm happy with the learning curve :)

In both pictures the flash is set to 1/8th power on a light stand to the left of camera, shutter 1/160th and I am apron 1m away from the wall. The only differences are that in the picture on the left, the flash is about 1m from my face and the aperture f/11, whilst in the picture on the right the flash is about 3m away from my face and aperture f/2.8.

What did I learn most of all? That all of my fudging f-stops and not bothering to learn the standard ratios etc because my camera will tell me all I need to know and I have spare memory to play with is coming back to bite me in the arse. I have some serious math-ing to catch up on :S

Much love,
D

Not my prettiest portrait but that wasn't the point. The point was to experiment with light DoF... it was interesting. For me at least.

Gah! Woman why oh why did you not move that damned stick?!

For once this photo barely has any processing done to it. I thought I was going to hate the photo but when it went up on the screen I liked it so - yeah.

Not much more to say. Very brain dead from my usual Sunday galavanting and thinking about the long week ahead makes me want to curl up in a ball and not leave the safety of my bedsheets for a month. :S

Via Flickr:
Sorry, I just had to. Well no I didn't have to but I got distracted during the time period allocated during the day for photo taking. Sadly it wasn't a good distraction :(

Anyway, meet the latest in the booties line up. They are Melissa boots which for those of you who aren't up with the bran means that they are made out of a waterproof poly-plastic type substance only they smell like bubblegum! :D (Which I love and mum detests) This particular pair look and feel like suede. So they are like mini gum boots only better!

Stop shaking your heads at me.

Much love,
D.
