7/365 Exposed

Today I wanted it to be all about the hair... and to do that I took away everything else.

When I was younger my hair was a gorgeous dark brown - straight but for a slight wave in the middle. It was so simple to take care off, shiny but not oily never fluffy, always voluminous and perfect when allowed to drip dry. Then puberty hit - I got a terrible hair cut one day and poof! It was a mess! Bad hair days everyday, uncontrollable, fluffy and awkward - hairdressers were baffles by it, they had no idea what to do.

What I didn't know at the time and what I was finally taught by a friendly nurturing hairdresser is that the type of hair we have changes about every 8 years or so... and mine, aided with a few raging hormones had decided to curl. I was unsure at first - I just want my old hair back! I don't want things to change! I've had enough change already!!! :-( But she was so calm and gentle with me that day. Washing my hair she treated it with the care of a delicate flower that might bruise at the smallest touch. She spoke to me the whole times in those soothing tones we use when approaching wild injured animals. She wouldn't let me look at my hair until it was finally cut, dried and styled. And then she smiled and brought in my mother and both told me how beautiful and lucky I was to have such stunning hair.

I still wasn't sure about it. But I liked that it wasn't fluffy! and I like how they made me feel. On that day she and my mother would help me take my first few baby steps towards accepting and ultimately loving this crazy new body of mine - we all have to start somewhere right?

I have been blessed throughout my life with many such empowering memories. Times where people have valued and cared for me when I am at my most fragile, who empower and believe in me even when I don't understand why anyone ever would.

Its crazy right? Having that much invested in your hair? I'm not saying I couldn't live without it, just that for the moment its one kind of physical reminder of all that good stuff.

I think it's beautiful now and while yes I admit to straightening it at times to ease its manageability and portray a "sophisticated" look... I really just love my curly hair; it makes me feel wild, free, sensual and just, well connected to myself, to my 'being' if you know what I mean?

On another note... I am completely torn over todays photo... to be monochrome or to be colour - that is the question. I love the mood the monochrome version creates but then I am also VERY attached to the golden colour of the highlights in my hair in the colour version .

It's a beautiful sunny day in Sydney (28*C at this moment) So I figure I'd better make the most of this pool worthy weather while I have it. This is my first "typical" portrait for this 365 challenge so I got to try my hand at retouching (sun + sweat + sunscreen does not a blemish free face create)... but I am not supposed to admit that am I? :-S

***

So thats all my Flickr friends get to see... beautiful touched up me :-P

But for all of my good friends reading this on thewarmthofsunshine... I'll let you in on a secretThis is what it looked like pre-retouching...

And just incase you can't tell the difference... here is one with strips of both...

So now you know my dirty little secret...

Anyway it was fun to create and now, If you don't mind, I am going to say goodbye to my computer screen and go enjoy the sun, water and great outdoors. Ciao!

Much love,
D.

In which an exhausted me decides that instead of getting lunch and rehydrating after a 1.5h pole dancing class (and this replenishing much needed blood sugar levels) that it would be an awesome idea to go climb some trees and in the process take some photos.

Actually what I really wanted to do was go pass out under a tree for a few minutes and then go for a photo wander... but alas! The Festival of Sydney started today and so I couldn't manage to find a grounded shot that did not feature ugly fencing or port-a-loos in the background :( and there were far to many people wandering around to pass out safely anyway.

Within about 60 minutes of taking this photo I was passed out on my bed and did not arise until dinner (if that gives you any indication as to the condition I was in... opps :-S)

In any case I am happy with this shot and had an excuse to climb some trees :-D

An alternate to this shot is here

Nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't the shot I had in mind.

Oh and never to be one to take a photo unscathed... if you are so inclined you may find my war wounds here
I suppose that's what I deserve for climbing trees...

I have a thing for standing on the edge of things... like swimming in the surf or going outside in the middle of a thunderstorm - it just feels easier to breathe.

This is the balcony out the front of my house. Needless to say, when I used my phone to take a photo of my cameras LCD screen and sent it too my mother she nearly had a heart attack! (Or so she tells me)

In which I learn that it's very annoying when you go for a walk scouting out photo locations, lugging tripod, camera and alternate lenses around only to discover upon set-up that you left your SD card in the computer and thus have no way of actually recording any images... :@

As a result I wasted a lot of time today and in the midst of all this fluster and buster didn't get an image I am entirely happy with... I'll live. When I have my time again I'll use a smaller aperture to get my face and hair in focus.

What I do like about this photo is the positioning of my left hand and the pops of colour (blue skirt, green foliage) against the grey concrete.

In this photo I liked the eye contact more than the "official" 365 photo of today however overall I just didn't "feel" this picture as much...

2/365 What do you do with all the leftover sparklers?

In which I discover that I am ultimately lazy when it comes to the more complicated/labour intensive aspects of Photoshop... and that sometimes its the photo you never meant to take in the first place that ends up being the one you fall in love with.

If your curious and want to see the image I was attempting to make when this happy accident occurred, you'll find it here:

1/365 A baptism of sorts...

I've decided that this year, along with everything else new that's going on... I'm going to do a 365 self portrait challenge.

Why self portraits? Because I always have me as a subject :) and I am less likely to get bored/frustrated and give up half way through a shoot. Also Asa sort of continuation of the whole self acceptance/love freedom journey that I've been on the last 18 months... And not documenting particularly well.

Enjoy!

Much love,
D.
